Playing with papercutting

This by no means is a finished project, it is just a trial run of learning a technique. When I want to try a new craft, I don’t spend a lot of time or money on the first draft, I just dive in and go for it. Usually by then I’ll get the hang of it and take a more invested route.

So here is my rough draft of papercutting. I love it and plan to do more!

1. Sketch a design. Think simple – like a coloring book. I used a marker on a sheet of recycled typing paper. Put x’s for the areas you want to cut out. Make sure your inner edges join with the outer edges.

2. (Patrick cut while I took this picture!) Use a craft knife and cut away where the x’s are.

3. Glue it against contrasting paper. I saved the inner piece and glued it in the center.

Other ideas: Imagine drawing or writing on the paper before you cut it. Or using foil or tin. Fabric. Glitter sheets. Duct tape? Why not? There are so many variations!

I’ll post pictures when I tackle a more detailed project! Until then, give it a try! If you need inspiration, check out Elsa Mora’s wonderful site, All About Papercutting. Trust me, you will want to bookmark it!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy 🙂
