How to glitter coffee cups

I’ve seen this on Pinterest and had to try it myself. It really works, it’s an easy resin craft, and it’s washable and totally sealed in. Here is my video on how I glittered a ceramic coffee mug!

The most important thing is to make sure the glitter is sealed. I’ve seen different methods with water-based sealer, and yes, they work. But you know – I really prefer using epoxy or resin. Let’s get into what you need to make this!

Glitter coffee cups – supplies:

– A plain mug, preferably with a smooth surface
– 2-part resin
– Glitter in your choice of colors
– Painter’s tape (for masking off areas you don’t want to glitter)
– Mixing cups for resin (plastic or silicone)
– Mixing sticks or a spoon for stirring the resin
– A small paintbrush or a silicone brush for applying resin
– Gloves (to protect your hands while working with resin)
– A protective covering for your work surface, like newspaper or a plastic sheet (I use wax paper)
– A well-ventilated workspace or a respirator mask (since working with resin can produce fumes)
– Mod Podge or another water-based sealer(optional, for an additional sealing layer after the resin)
– A clear spray sealer (optional, for added protection and gloss after the resin cures)

NOTE: Safety is important when working with resin, so ensure you’re in a well-ventilated area and follow all manufacturer instructions for the resin and hardener.

Make the mug:

1. Start with a clean, dry mug. Ensure the surface is smooth for the best adhesion.

2. Protect your working area with newspaper or a plastic sheet to catch spills or drips.

3. If you want to keep certain areas of the mug free from glitter, use painter’s tape to mask these areas.

4. Mix a small batch of epoxy resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure to wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area, as resin can be sticky and sometimes produce fumes.

5. Apply a thin layer of mixed resin to the area of the mug you want to glitter. Use a brush or a silicone applicator to spread the resin evenly. Be careful to avoid drips.

6. While the resin is still wet, sprinkle 9or pour) your choice of glitter over it, covering the resin-coated area completely. Do this over a tray or piece of paper to catch any excess glitter which can be reused.

7. Tap off the excess glitter and carefully remove any painter’s tape you’ve used. Allow the resin to cure completely, which can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours depending on the product and environmental conditions.

8. Once the resin and glitter layer is fully cured and hard to the touch, evaluate the coverage. If necessary, you can mix another small batch of resin, apply it over the glitter for a smoother finish, and allow it to cure again. This step is optional but can help seal the glitter more thoroughly.

9. After the final resin layer has cured, you may apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or another sealer over it if you want an extra layer of protection, but this is often not necessary since resin is very durable and waterproof once cured.

10. Allow the mug to cure completely after any additional coatings. This curing process is crucial for the resin to fully harden and for any smells to dissipate.

NOTE: Your mug is now durable and water-resistant on the outside. However, it has to be resin-free on the inside. Avoid getting resin inside the mug or around the rim where your mouth will touch.

Also, resin-coated items should be hand-washed only, as high temperatures from dishwashers can damage the resin finish. Microwave use is also not recommended for resin-coated items due to the risk of overheating and damaging the resin.
