Why is glitter so addicting? Because it is mesmerizing, shiny, happy and oh-so-magical looking. It adds a crystallized dimension to anything it comes in contact with, whether it be a handmade gift tag, a shadow box or even your eyeball (ouch!). It dates back many centuries and comes in all kinds of grades, sizes and qualities. Germany is known for creating a high-end version made from crushed vintage glass!Glitter is made from ultra fine particles of plastic films and metallic foil. When used to accent an otherwise "flat" surface glitter will give off a sparkly brilliant sheen that will stand out strong and make people gasp in glee.

It's appeal can be found in everything from cosmetics to yarn to toys to school supplies. Right now in my possession I have glitter lotion, lipstick, eyeshadow, sunscreen, nail polish, hair gel, pens, markers, paper, shoes, belts - you get the gist. But we know it is most appreciated in our artwork! There are GOBS of glitter products on the market for all kinds of projects. It can come in solid colors or in iridescent shades. Try layering a clear glitter over a solid color of paint and see how gorgeous it will look!

Here are the basics: Coarse glitter: This is the stuff we used in kindergarten. It's made from larger sized flakes (think coffee grounds) and works well for covering large surfaces.Micro or ultra fine glitter: Great for jewelry making, embellishing clothing or paper projects. It's very fine like fairy dust.Squeeze glitter: This the icing-like stuff that comes in a small tube so you can outline designs on clothing, shoes, decoupage pitcures, whatever...Spray glitter: It comes in an aerosol can and will make any floral arrangement POP. I love to matching colors - like green glitter over green paint - it adds mucho dimension and depth. This stuff also works well to add a light glaze of glitter over larger projects. But use it outside so you won't get physically high, OK? It's real stinky.

Fabric spray glitter: Water-based and made to be used on clothing. Yes, that means it won't come out in the wash. We likee!Glitter varnish: Take my temperature, I'm getting feverish just thinking about it! This is a water-based brush on. Paint on a coat over a flat surface and see what joy it will bring into your life that day. Good for all kinds of stuff. There are a lot of other kinds, but these three are best if you are just starting out. I don't want to overwhelm you!Glitter is like a drug - try it once and you'll crave more and more. Pretty soon your friends and family will be butting in trying to help you get your life back in order.

Trust me, I know!

General guidelines for using glitter:I always put a piece of paper under my project so I can catch the overflow and pour it back into it's container. Yes, there are plastic trays you can buy for this purpose but I just use a piece of paper. It leaves me more coin to spend on GLITTER!Use a brush to paint the surface of your project with white glue (dries clear) or acrylic paint. There are various glues made just for glitter, but again, I stick with basic supplies and they work just fine. To make thin lines of glitter, use a liner brush, for larger areas, use a bigger brush. Micro glitter is nice because it comes in a small bottle with a skinny applicator tip. It's your preference which to use.If you use squeeze glitter, make sure to use it as the last application on your project because it takes several hours to cure. It is easy to smear before then, especially if you are left-handed like me!Quickly pour over the sparkly stuff. Tap off the excess. When you are done, set it with a spray-on sealant.
