"Kathy Cano Murillo strikes us as one of those people who, stranded on a desert island with nothing but a volleyball, a deck of playing cards and some coconuts, would not only craft a rescue vehicle and distress
signal but whip up a spiffy castaway-themed wardrobe to wear as she did
so. And she would be having a great time. And so would you. Visit the
Arizona Republic contributor's site to get the craft fever yourself."

ATC Swap
Hi Kathy!
I feel as though we are old friends ~grins~ cause I read you all of the time. I have just gotten into ATC's and I love them. Do you know when you might be doing another trade? I would love to get into one that you would host.
Thanks!! Mindy
Hi Mindy! I'd be glad to host one again! Please check back this April or May. And sign up for the newsletter, I'll mention it in there! Kathy :-) ********** http://www.CraftyChica.com
Please help. I was given a (practically) brand new computer desk chair for free. I needed one for my son's room. Well, the chair turned out to be mauve in color. Now, don't get me wrong- I appreciated it and said thank you. My son has not complained (yet) but then again his friends haven't been over yet. He's twelve so I'd like to paint the fabric before this marks him for life. HAHAHA. Anyways, how can I paint the fabric or cover it up without tearing apart the chair? It is in such good condition I'd hate to mess it up. Hope to hear from you before our next pinata. Thank you and I'm enjoying you site. Always, Debi
Hi Debi! What kind of fabric is it? On most fabrics you can use water-based acrylic, lots of it! You can apply a layer of gesso to make it smooth to paint on, and then dive in with acrylics. Use large foam stamps if you feel like gettin' funky with it. When you are done, use a water-based varnish to seal it all in. Hope it works out! Kathy :-) ********** http://www.CraftyChica.com
Hello: I actually found your site by accident, and I am so happy I did. I am still reading your bio, and whatever else I can, and you are an amazing woman!
I have often thought of taking some samples of my Art into various stores in NYC, and to read that you actually did that years ago was so exciting. I know you have worked very hard, but what a success story. Congratulations. And I love your sense of humor.
Today I went to Home Depot, way too big for me, and bought a Soldering iron, flux, and solder to begin a project which involves layering and glass slides. I was so excited, and then she asked if I had the copper tape? "Judy", the saleswoman, was very pleasant though, and encouraged me to bring a finished piece in so she could see what I'm doing. I found this great idea in a Someerset Studio magazine from 2003. Lucky me! There are no details how to do this. I guess I can teach myself, but I was hoping to find instructions online. I will continue my search. Going back now to finish reading your bio. You also have a beautiful family I would like to add.
Thank you for sharing your talent. Sincerest Wishes for a wonderful 2005. Mary Hernandez Hi Mary! Actually, a secret of mine when soldering - I use rosin wire instead of solder wire, it already has the flux in it, so you can skip that process. It makes it sooo easier!! Thanks so much for your kind words and inspiration! Kathy :-) ********** http://www.CraftyChica.com
Hi Kathy! First and foremost, I love love love your site! Such an inspiration to a craft nerd like myself. :) Now, with that said and done, here's my query. I want to make a static cling bumper sticker. Is there a type of static cling vinyl that's thin enough to run through my printer? If so, where would I purchase it from? If there isn't, is there a material that I can perhaps substitute vinyl for to get the same effect?
Thanks for any help you can offer! Have a super week!!
Rachael ^_^
Howdy Rachel! As a matter of fact - YES! Avery makes a cool product called "Window Decals" and you can buy them at office supply or big grocery store chains. Here in Phoenix, I saw them at Frys Marketplace, they are owned by Kroger.
Hi Ms. Murillo We got your fun book , D.I.Y. Stylebook--from the library. We haven't done very much, but there sure are a lot of fun looking projects. My daughter and I hope to spend a little time at our local farmer's market this summer. We've got lots of blackberries, and I hope to make some nice cards out of some photos of our island (Whidbey Island, WA). I read the copyright on the cover of your book, and I realize I can reporduce anypart of the book, which I would not anyway, But if we make some of the things from the book, are we allowed to sell those? Sam (my daughter) likes the lip gloss and the glitter powder, I'd like to try the soap, although the molds I've found aren't as cool and simple as you're straight bublegum blocks, and they didn't have bubblegum scent, which is what I thought was the coolest part of the project. She made a little of the gloss and will put a little more glitter and color in it next time. I tried the olive oil sea salt scrub on my feet today, and I can't stop looking and touching them--they are quite soft--I think it took at least ten years off my old worn heels. We didn't have any essential peppermint oil, so we used extract--worked swell. Thought I might try some lavender in some. Anyway, I'm not sure if we will be ambitious enough to make enough to sell (as we really aren't what you'd call "crafty divas") anything we make, but if we are, are we allowed to? Please advise. Thanks Andi
Hi Andi!
Thank you so much for writing! And feel free, just do something to make them your own. I hope you do really well, I'm honored you like the projects that much! Here are some tips for selling:
- Make some fun, personalized labels for your products. It makes them look more professional and people like that! - If you can, wear some of the pieces you make. It will show to people that you love and believe in the things you make.
In a (hefty) nutshell: I'm a mom, wife, artist, author & left-handed middle-child binge crafter Sagittarian. We have 4 Chihuahuas. I designed a product line with Duncan Enterprises - it launches this summer nationwide!
I write a weekly nationally syndicated craft column for The Arizona Republic.
I've authored six books. My 7th is a sewing book for Potter Craft and it comes out Feb. 17, 2009.
I wrote and sold my first novel, "Love Shine". It comes out in summer 2009 (Grand Central Publishing).
I make and sell a line of "Chicano Pop Art" with my husband, Patrick Murillo. He does all my illos! We are currently prepping for a six-month art installation for the Heard Museum. It opens October 2008.
I have a web series with LifetimeTV.com called "Crafting With the Chica".
I love to read. I watch too much TV!

Note to visitors:
Hola! This site is the archive of all my past projects for Gannett News Service and The Arizona Republic. These ideas are for personal use only. I make a living as a craft designer, so I will be using these ideas in my published works. If you are thinking of selling or using these ideas for profit, please give respect and "twist" them to make them your own - put your own stamp on them to make them different. It will work out for the best for both of us! Thank you and much respect from one creative person to another! — Kathy
