Dear Crafty Chica,
First off, just want to say that I consider us kindred, since we're from the same generation, and the same culture. Anyhow, is there a substitute for gesso when it comes to paper mache? I'm low on funds right now, and I'd like to finish my project. Since I have your attention, there's one other thing.... do you have any suggestions on what I could use colored rice paper for? I bought a big pack of it when I went to Chinatown in San Francisco. Well, I look forward to your reply. Keep up the inspiration, sister! I'm a regular at your web site. Thanks a million, Denise Hi Denise! I've never used gesso for papier mache. I'm cheap - I mix 2 parts flour with one part water with a healthy squirt of Elmer's and it comes out perfect. Kinda like creamy Cream of Wheat. Yum. As far as the rice paper - oh lordy...If I had a big pack of it I would use it on altered book projects, decoupage, mini lights, or make little mini journals. In a (hefty) nutshell: I'm a mom, wife, artist, author & left-handed middle-child binge crafter Sagittarian. We have 4 Chihuahuas. I designed a product line with Duncan Enterprises - it launches this summer nationwide! I write a weekly nationally syndicated craft column for The Arizona Republic. I've authored six books. My 7th is a sewing book for Potter Craft and it comes out Feb. 17, 2009. I wrote and sold my first novel, "Love Shine". It comes out in summer 2009 (Grand Central Publishing). I make and sell a line of "Chicano Pop Art" with my husband, Patrick Murillo. He does all my illos! We are currently prepping for a six-month art installation for the Heard Museum.
