Woodburned Cutting Board Tutorial

Woodburned cutting boards are everywhere these days! Actually, woodburning in general. For this project, I ditched the traditional tool and used a micro torch that has a pointed attachment. I normally use this tool for soldering jewelry, but with such a fine tip, I thought I’d see if it worked on wood and it did!

This worked out perfect for this month’s torchbearer Bernzomatic project! I used the ST500: 3 in 1 Micro Torch, it works three ways – as a mini-blow hot air blower, a solder iron (or woodburning tool), or a micro torch with a pinpoint flame.

This is a really easy project, great for beginners!

SUPPLIES:

Bernzomatic ST500: 3 in 1 Micro Torch and butane – you can find both at Home Depot or online too!

Soft wood cutting board (I bought mine at the craft store)

Pencil and eraser

Gloves and goggles

Before I knew what I wanted to put on my board, I simply outlined the edges.

Then I practiced my curves, just to become familiar with the personality of the wood. This helped me decide what design to draw in the center. I asked my husband to draw one of his famous Day of the Dead doggies! Then I went to work to outline all of him!

After that, I erased all the pencil lines.

Here is a tip I learned. Okay, at the top of the tool is a little hole that acts as a vent. Always keep this pointed UP and AWAY. I know this, I’ve mentioned it before, but this time I forgot and it left a couple scorch marks! I would suggest practicing first on scrap wood to get the hang of it before tackling a big project.

Regardless, I’m pretty happy with this!

You can hang this up in your kitchen or use it to serve cheese and crackers. Before use, make sure to wash it with soapy water and let air dry. Use a cutting board sealant (here’s an article I found!).

Thanks so much for checking out my project! I’m so happy with this cutting board, I’m ready to make more of them!

From the Bernzomatic site:

“Find Your Fire. There’s a fire in each of us. Waiting to ignite. We believe in carrying the torch ignited by our founder in 1876—whose quality craftsmanship and progressive mindset are what blazed the trail that got us here today. We believe in awakening the innovators in all of us—inspiring a culture of creators who can break boundaries, mark new territory and go where no flame has burned before. We believe in empowering those who’ve found their flame and dare to follow it. Because the ones who do are the catalysts of bold transformations that redefine the limits of what we can achieve.   We believe in our fire and in your fire. It’s time to ignite.”
