Book Review: Paint By Sticker

The adult coloring book craze hit a nerve with overworked, stressed-out Americans looking for a calming outlet to release tension. It’s no surprise book companies would like to cash in on this trend by offering up variations of adult arts and crafts time. Workman Publishing has thrown their hat into the game with Paint by Sticker: Create 12 Masterpieces One Sticker at a Time!, an arts and crafts experience that includes everything needed to “create 12 masterpieces one sticker at a time!”

Let’s see how this played out.

paint-by-sticker-2It was fairly easy to get lost in creating one of the 12 options which include a hummingbird, a sky with hot air balloons, table with fruit, and a fox. The latter being our choice to test. The concept is simple and much like a paint-by-numbers painting.

The book is split up into two sections. The first part has 12 pictures, each of which has been split into a number of blank sections of varying sizes with a letter and number on them. These coordinate with the stickers that are in the second part of the book. All of the pages are perforated, so they can be easily removed.pbn_5

Admittedly, it was a little frustrating at the beginning getting the stickers to align just right. Perfectionists and those with a touch of O.C.D. beware, you will have spots that, no matter how hard you try, won’t line up and you’ll see a bit of the backing page. Take a deep breath and let it go. Also, follow as the instructions suggest and use tweezers to place the smaller stickers on the page. Once we did this, it made a world of difference, especially with our short, stubby fingers!paint-by-sticker6

Make sure to set aside a good chunk of time to finish a complete “painting,” as it took us just under three hours to finish our fox. Using the tweezers did speed things up a bit, so it could take a considerably less amount of time to finish if you do this from the start. This is a perfect project that you could carve out a little bit of time throughout the day to work on when you need a little break from the stress of work or kids or life in general.pbn_1

All in all, this was an enjoyable experience! It is great for those who like to focus fully on a project and don’t really want to spend too much time worrying about which colors to choose to color or carrying around a case of colored pencils or markers. We would recommend the titles below for the little ones in your life as many of the stickers are extremely tiny and this is precision work.
