Posada Candy Bags leaves no child (or adult behind). They are part of the festivities of posada!

What is Posada?

“Posada” is a traditional Mexican celebration that takes place during the Christmas season, specifically in the nine days leading up to Christmas Eve (December 16th to 24th).

The word “posada” translates to “inn” or “lodging” in Spanish, and the celebration reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.

Here’s a breakdown of what Posada entails:

  • Posadas are deeply rooted in Christian tradition, symbolizing the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay where Jesus could be born.
  • Participants often form a procession as they go from house to house, symbolizing the journey of Mary and Joseph. At each home, they sing traditional posada songs  asking for shelter. The songs are sung in a call-and-response format, with the residents of the house responding, initially denying shelter and then welcoming them in.
  • A key feature of the posada is the breaking of a piñata. Traditionally, the piñata is a seven-pointed star representing the seven deadly sins. The act of breaking the piñata symbolizes the triumph of virtue over sin. The piñata is filled with fruits, sweets, and candies, which are shared among the participants once it’s broken.
  • Traditional foods served during posadas include tamales, buñuelos (a type of fritter), atole (a warm, corn-based beverage), and ponche navideño (a hot fruit punch). These foods are part of the festive atmosphere and are often shared amongst the guests.

While posadas are festive, there’s also a religious observance involved. It often includes the reading of scripture, prayers, and the reenactment of the nativity scene.

Posadas are very much about community and hospitality, emphasizing the importance of welcoming others and sharing with them in the spirit of the season.

Participants in the procession often carry candles or lanterns, symbolizing the guiding light in the journey.

Everyone has a chance to play and celebrate and the posada candy bags are a special loot of treats to take home – just in case one missed out on the piñata rewards, they won’t go home empty-handed.

Generally, you would use the same candy from the inside the piñata, as well as citrus and peanuts.

I used the granola cookies on the bottom of each bag, then filled with chocolates, nuts and hard candies. I love the hard candies because they are so colorful and pretty!
