Holiday Book: My True Love Gave to Me

If you are like me, and really, really dig holiday movies and all things magical about the Christmas season, you’ll L-O-V-E this new book, My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories, edited by Stephanie Perkins ($18.99, St. Martin’s Griffin, hardcover). Penned by an array of young adult writers, the book contains a dozen love stories that are far from sappy or goofy. They are bright, clever, funny, sometimes a little rough, but collectively make a wonderful holiday treat for the soul.

It’s like twelve little Hallmark movies in story form. Wait. Let me back up. Not quite Hallmark. More like ABC Family or MTV, because some of these have a bit of edge, and the themes skew much younger. Think high school and college.

I was pleasantly surprised to find stories and authors that cover a wide range of American culture. And even better, there are few stereotypes, in fact, these young authors paint pictures that are realistic in the way that they the characters deal with universal issues…and just happen to be of different races, ethnicities and social economic backgrounds. Some chapters are stronger than others, some have magical realism, some are dreamy, and others a bit hardcore. The result is you won’t get bored!

Check out this cover – it has the characters ice skating! I first bought this book on audiobook and loved it so much I went to the bookstore and bought the hardback. If you don’t have time to sit down and read – maybe because you are too busy crafting? Then I suggest going the audiobook. It has different actors/narrators for each story that bring the scenes and people to life. In fact, one of them – Julia Whelan, is the narrator for my Waking Up in the Land of Glitter audiobook!

This is definitely a great gift idea for readers of all ages who love to celebrate the Christmas magic!
