This DIY tie dye rainbow yarn project is BRILLIANT! If you are an avid crocheter, knitter or fiber artist, you’ll love this method. I’ve made this tie dye rainbow yarn several times and the whole time i’m using it, I feel so excited and proud. We all love tie dye but sometimes we want to go beyond the shirt or dress and do something different. That’s where this idea comes in.
Make it your own
I used every color in the tie dye kit, but you can create ombre style yarn or your favorite solid colors. Talk about custom fine tuning! Okay, let me go into this!
What you need to make tie dye rainbow yarn: Tie Dye Kit
NOTE: You MUST use cotton yarn, or silk or rayon – natural fibers. Polyester yarn will not take the dye.
Directions:
Line your work area with a plastic tablecover and cookie cooling tray on top.
Unwind the skein and wrap it around your elbows. Spray the yarn with water to make it very wet, then blot it with paper towels.
Mix up the dye colors according to package directions, put on plastic gloves.
Set yarn on top and add one color at a time, section by section. You can use the spray dye or the bottle dye, either will work.
Cover with plastic, let set for six hours.
Unwrap, tie loosely with large rubberbands or string, put it in a mesh laundry bag and rinse until the water runs clear. Wash it in the machine and then remove from the mesh bag and spread it out in the bundle to dry.
