Here is a Sugar Skull Piñata Tutorial that is different because it doesn’t require a balloon. Read on to see how you can make one of these, it is much easier than you think!
First of all, why are we making sugar skull piñatas? It’s for Dia de Los Muertos.
This is a 3,000 year-old tradition from Mexico where we honor our loved ones who have passed on. The overall spirit is celebrating the cycle of life. An ofrenda is set up in the home or graveyard and lined with fresh marigolds, sugar skulls, copal and small items representing the soul who passed.

I’m sooooo excited to share this Sugar Skull Piñata Tutorial with you!
I’ve been making piñatas for a while now and hate, hate, hate the balloon method. I don’t feel like I can manipulate the shape to the best of my ability. It finally dawned on me to come up with a variation.
I vowed to change the world of piñata making!
After a bit of tinkering, I found the PERFECT balloon alternative.
Collective deep sigh of relief, I know!
Here are my three piñatas, all ruffled up with party streamer. You can see the technique I used in the video tutorial.
Genius! I’ll have to try this for my daughter’s next birthday party. We always do a pinata, but we haven’t been able to find or make a good one yet.
These are beautiful!! The video tutorial link doesn’t seem to link to a video. Can you please direct me to that tutorial? Thanks so much!
