I can never have enough blank books. These fabric embellished journals are proof. I bought a stack of hardback sketchbooks at the craft store and loved the clean, smooth covers. Ahhh, they were crying for decorations.
There are so many ways to tackle this project, but I decided to go with fabric. I have LOTS of material that I need to use up. It’s too pretty to giveaway. So I took one piece and cut out the images to use as appliques. If you love this Frida fabric, you can find it on Etsy!
I also used my Cricut to embellish more of these journals. What am I doing with all these books? I have them for sale at my store, Mucho Mas Art Studio in Phoenix. And they sell pretty well!
Supplies to make fabric embellished journals
Hardback blank journals
Fabric with fun designs, cut out the designs with pinking shears
Mod Podge or other craft glue
Puffy Paint
Gems, paint, ribbon, etc.
Coat the back of the fabric piece with the adhesive and then press on the front of the journal. Use an old gift card to smooth out any bubbles.
Let it dry for a few minutes, then decide how you want to embellish! I like to outline the fabric with Puffy Paint. It seals the edges and gives it a nice finished look.
Pull out gems, sequins, ribbons, or just craft paint. I did all of the above to give these journals a magical touch!
You can choose to only use one accent style or do what I did and use all of them together! More is more. I’m not a minimalist at all!
Use extra strength to glue down heavy items, like the gems. You don’t want them to fall off!
